PTA has issued a new set of device management guidelines aimed at helping citizens safeguard themselves and their families from the growing threat of cyber crime and data theft. The recommendations come amid a rise in online fraud, digital harassment, and data breaches that continue to affect internet users across Pakistan. The authority said the measures are intended to give individuals greater control over the security of all devices used within a household, including smartphones, tablets, and computers, while also improving public awareness about the importance of protecting personal information in an increasingly connected environment.
According to PTA, cyber criminals are using a variety of techniques to target unsuspecting users online, often resulting in financial losses and privacy violations. The authority warned that personal devices commonly store sensitive documents, photographs, contacts, and other confidential information that could be exposed to theft or misuse if a device is lost, stolen, or compromised. To reduce these risks, PTA has advised users to regularly back up important data to secure cloud storage platforms or external storage devices. Maintaining updated backups can help users recover critical information and reduce the impact of cyber incidents or accidental data loss. The authority also emphasized the importance of keeping devices updated with the latest software versions and security patches, as outdated systems often contain vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious actors.
As part of its guidance, PTA has recommended that users strengthen access controls by enabling strong passwords and using biometric authentication methods such as fingerprint recognition and facial identification. These measures can significantly reduce the chances of unauthorized access to personal devices and sensitive information. The authority also encouraged citizens to activate location tracking features such as Find My iPhone and Find My Google, which can assist users in locating lost or stolen devices and, in some cases, remotely locking or erasing data to prevent misuse. In addition, PTA highlighted the importance of parental control tools that allow parents and guardians to manage screen time, restrict access to certain applications, and block inappropriate content for children using digital devices.
PTA further advised users to perform a complete factory reset on smartphones, tablets, and computers before selling, donating, or sending them for repairs. The authority noted that failing to erase personal data properly can leave sensitive information accessible to third parties and increase the risk of identity theft or data misuse. The newly issued guidelines form part of PTA’s broader efforts to improve cybersecurity awareness and encourage the adoption of good digital hygiene practices among citizens. As online services and digital platforms become increasingly integrated into everyday life, authorities continue to stress the importance of proactive security measures to reduce cyber risks and help individuals protect their personal information from emerging online threats.
