National CERT Conducts Five Day Certified Application Security Engineer Training For Government Officials In Islamabad

The National Cyber Emergency Response Team conducted a structured five day Certified Application Security Engineer training program in Islamabad for government officials, aiming to strengthen secure software development practices and improve application security capabilities across public sector institutions.

The training was delivered by National CERT Pakistan through its Capacity Building Directorate as part of its ongoing initiatives to enhance cybersecurity readiness within government departments. The program brought together 45 government employees representing various ministries, divisions, and attached departments. The primary focus was to develop stronger understanding and practical skills in application security, secure software development lifecycle principles, vulnerability identification, and secure coding methodologies. The initiative was designed to support long term institutional capacity building and reinforce secure development practices across government digital systems that are increasingly reliant on software driven services and interconnected platforms.

Throughout the five day program, participants were trained on a wide range of technical domains including secure software development lifecycle (SSDLC), application security fundamentals, secure coding practices, common web application vulnerabilities, vulnerability assessment techniques, threat modeling, and security testing methodologies. The curriculum also included internationally recognized best practices for building and maintaining secure applications in modern IT environments. Sessions combined theoretical instruction with practical exposure, allowing participants to engage in hands on exercises, real world case studies, secure coding demonstrations, and collaborative technical discussions. This blended approach enabled participants to directly apply concepts in simulated environments, improving their understanding of how vulnerabilities are introduced and mitigated during different stages of software development.

The training sessions were highly interactive, with participants actively engaging with instructors throughout the program. Discussions centered on identifying security gaps in application design, improving code quality, and implementing preventive security measures during development rather than after deployment. The emphasis on proactive security practices highlighted the importance of embedding security by design principles into all stages of software creation. Participants demonstrated strong engagement and commitment to improving their technical capabilities, reflecting a growing institutional awareness of the importance of secure development practices in safeguarding digital infrastructure and public sector services.

At the closing ceremony, Director General of Dr. Haider Abbas addressed the participants and distributed certificates of participation. He acknowledged the dedication and active involvement of all attendees and emphasized the importance of continuous professional development in cybersecurity. He reiterated that National CERT, through its Capacity Building initiatives, remains committed to strengthening the cybersecurity workforce, enhancing secure application development capabilities, and fostering a stronger cybersecurity culture across government institutions. He further highlighted that such structured training programs play a key role in supporting Pakistan’s broader digital transformation efforts by ensuring that government systems are developed and maintained with strong security foundations.
