Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a stern warning about a significant increase in phishing scams targeting social media users. Hackers are exploiting the popularity of platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp to trick users into revealing sensitive information.
How the Scam Works:
The scam involves sending malicious links or messages that appear to be from legitimate sources. These messages often demand One-Time Passwords (OTPs), claiming they are necessary for account verification or security purposes. Once users enter their OTPs, their accounts are compromised, leading to a rise in hacking incidents and financial fraud.
PTA’s Advice to Protect Yourself:
PTA has urged users to be vigilant and avoid clicking on unknown links or sharing their personal details with anyone who requests them. Remember, PTA will never ask for your password, OTP, or other sensitive information via phone, email, or message.
How to Report Phishing Attempts:
If you encounter a phishing attempt, take immediate action. Block or report the number or account involved to your mobile phone operator. Additionally, you can report the scam to PTA directly through their website, PTA CMS mobile app, or toll-free number.
For financial fraud, contact the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and report the incident. To protect your bank accounts, contact the State Bank of Pakistan.
PTA’s alert serves as a reminder of the importance of online safety. By staying informed about the latest scams and following PTA’s guidelines, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to phishing attacks.
