Prediction markets platform Polymarket temporarily suspended trading on its international platform after identifying a security incident involving one of its third party service providers. Trading on Polymarket.com remained offline for nearly an hour while the company investigated the issue and implemented corrective measures before restoring normal operations. During the disruption, users reported concerns on the platform’s Discord community, with some claiming that funds had been removed from their cryptocurrency wallets. While Polymarket did not confirm the reported financial losses, it assured users that anyone affected by the incident would receive full reimbursement. The company stated that user protection remains a priority and confirmed it is reviewing the incident with urgency while working alongside relevant authorities.
According to Polymarket, the incident was linked to the compromise of a third party provider rather than the platform’s own infrastructure. The company stated that it had identified and resolved the issue affecting its international platform before resuming trading. Out of caution, trading was temporarily halted while security teams investigated the situation and ensured the platform could safely return online. Polymarket also stated that the matter had been referred to relevant law enforcement authorities after the attack was believed to have originated from the United Kingdom. A person familiar with the matter stated that the unauthorized access to user funds was connected to software provided by DebugBear, a web analytics and website performance service. Around the same time, DebugBear confirmed through its official communication channels that it was responding to an ongoing security incident, although further technical details were not immediately disclosed.
Blockchain analysis cited by crypto news outlet The Block estimated that approximately $2.65 million in cryptocurrency may have been transferred from Polymarket users’ wallets during the incident. The report referenced analysis from blockchain intelligence company Arkham. Polymarket declined to confirm the reported figure or provide additional information regarding the exact attack method while the investigation remains active. The company instead focused on assuring users that all verified affected traders would be fully reimbursed. It also advised the community that the identified issue had been fixed before trading resumed approximately one hour after the platform was taken offline. Polymarket’s United States based platform was not affected by the security incident, with the disruption limited to its international service.
The incident highlights the growing cybersecurity risks associated with third party software providers that support online platforms. Security experts have increasingly observed that compromising trusted external vendors can provide an indirect route into larger digital services, making supply chain related attacks an ongoing concern across the technology sector. Polymarket remains one of the largest prediction market platforms, processing approximately $200 million in daily trading activity and reaching a reported valuation of $21 billion following a major investment round in September. At the same time, the company continues to address other operational matters, including investigations into suspicious betting activity related to elections in Israel and the United States. Rival prediction market platform Kalshi has also reported investigations into unusual betting activity, reflecting the increased attention on market integrity as prediction platforms continue to expand while managing evolving cybersecurity and regulatory challenges.
