Pakistani Cybersecurity Chief Addresses AI’s Role in Defense at Beijing Conference

Dr. Haider Abbas, Director General of the National CERT, was invited by the Chinese government as a keynote speaker and panelist at the 2024 Beijing Cybersecurity Conference.

Dr. Abbas’s keynote address, titled “The AI Paradox: Enhancing Cybersecurity or Intensifying Threats?”, explored the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the cybersecurity landscape. He shed light on both the potential benefits of AI in strengthening defenses and the novel threats it introduces, such as adversarial AI, weaponized AI, and the manipulation of information through deep fakes.

Beyond his keynote, Dr. Abbas participated in a panel discussion focused on national strategies for the safe and responsible use of AI across various sectors, including cybersecurity, healthcare, finance, and critical infrastructure protection. He stressed the importance of developing a comprehensive national AI strategy that considers ethical, legal,and regulatory implications, while ensuring equitable distribution of benefits.

The Beijing Cybersecurity Conference, China’s largest cybersecurity event, attracted cybersecurity experts from industry, academia, and government sectors worldwide. Dr. Abbas used this platform to explore collaboration opportunities between NCERT Pakistan and other international organizations, fostering cooperation in addressing cyber threats and building global cyber resilience.
