Pakistan NCERT Issues High Alert Over Potential Cyber Attacks On Marqa E Haq Anniversary

Pakistan’s National Computer Emergency Response Team, widely known as NCERT, has issued a high priority cybersecurity alert warning of possible coordinated cyber attacks ahead of the first anniversary of Marqa e Haq. The advisory highlights concerns that the symbolic date could be used as a trigger point for malicious cyber activity targeting critical national infrastructure across multiple government institutions. According to the alert, ministries and departments are considered at increased risk during this period and have been urged to take immediate precautionary measures to strengthen their digital defenses and reduce exposure to potential disruptions.

The advisory emphasizes that all government ministries must ensure their systems are updated with the latest security patches, including operating systems, firewalls, and anti malware solutions. NCERT has directed departments to conduct detailed security assessments to identify potential weaknesses and ensure systems are properly hardened against intrusion attempts. Continuous monitoring has also been recommended to detect any unusual or unauthorized activity within networks. These measures are intended to reduce the likelihood of successful intrusion attempts and improve overall resilience across critical digital infrastructure.

A key part of the guidance focuses on strengthening authentication and access control practices. NCERT has instructed officials to adopt stronger password policies, recommending the use of complex and unique credentials across systems. The advisory also highlights the importance of enabling multi factor authentication to prevent unauthorized access even in cases where login credentials may be compromised. Alongside these measures, authorities have been warned about increased risks associated with phishing emails and social engineering attacks, which remain common methods used to gain unauthorized access to sensitive systems. Awareness training for staff has been recommended to improve detection and reporting of suspicious communications.

In addition to preventive controls, ministries have been instructed to maintain regular backups of critical data and ensure that these backups are stored securely to minimize the impact of any potential breach or system compromise. NCERT has further called for continuous coordination between government agencies, encouraging rapid reporting of vulnerabilities, irregularities, or suspicious activity. The advisory underlines the importance of collective response mechanisms in strengthening national cybersecurity preparedness. It also reflects ongoing efforts to ensure that government systems remain protected during periods identified as potentially sensitive due to geopolitical or symbolic significance.
