NADRA Urges Citizens To Protect CNIC Information From Fraud And Identity Misuse

National Database and Registration Authority has issued a public advisory urging citizens to take greater precautions when handling their Computerised National Identity Cards and personal information to reduce the risk of identity misuse and fraud. The advisory comes amid growing concerns over attempts by fraudsters to obtain sensitive personal data through deceptive methods, including fake phone calls, text messages, and social media communications. By reminding the public to follow safe practices when sharing identity documents, NADRA aims to strengthen awareness of identity protection and encourage responsible handling of personal information in both physical and digital environments.

According to the advisory, NADRA has instructed citizens not to hand over their CNICs as collateral or security under any circumstances. The authority also advised people not to accept another person’s CNIC as security for any financial or personal transaction, emphasizing that identity documents should never be used as guarantees between individuals. NADRA further recommended avoiding unnecessary photocopies of CNICs whenever possible. In situations where a photocopy is required, citizens should clearly write the specific purpose for which the copy is being provided. Once that purpose has been fulfilled, the authority advised that the photocopy should be destroyed to reduce the possibility of unauthorized reuse or misuse of personal identity information.

The authority also warned the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent attempts to collect personal information through fake phone calls, SMS messages, and social media platforms. Cybercriminals frequently impersonate government organizations, financial institutions, or service providers to convince individuals to disclose sensitive personal details that can later be used for identity fraud or financial crimes. NADRA emphasized that citizens should exercise caution before sharing any personal information in response to unsolicited communications and should verify the authenticity of any request claiming to originate from the authority or another official organization. Maintaining awareness of these tactics is an important step in preventing identity related fraud and protecting confidential information.

NADRA stated that safeguarding CNIC information is a shared responsibility between the authority and the public, particularly as digital services continue to expand across Pakistan. By following the recommended precautions, citizens can reduce the likelihood of unauthorized access to their personal information and help prevent identity related fraud. The authority also encouraged members of the public who require further guidance or wish to report complaints regarding suspicious activity to contact the NADRA helpline by dialing 1777. Through this advisory, NADRA continues to promote stronger public awareness of identity protection practices while encouraging citizens to remain alert against evolving fraud attempts targeting personal information.
