Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a public advisory warning citizens about the increasing number of phishing attacks that are putting personal data, financial information and online accounts at risk. According to PTA, cybercriminals are using fraudulent emails, text messages and phone calls to deceive individuals into revealing sensitive information, including passwords, banking credentials and other personal details. The authority cautioned that these messages are often designed to appear authentic and frequently create a sense of urgency to encourage recipients to respond quickly without verifying their legitimacy. It emphasized that individuals should never disclose one time passwords, passwords, PINs or financial information through email, text messages or phone calls, regardless of how convincing the request may appear.
To strengthen online security, PTA recommended that users create strong and unique passwords for every online account and enable two factor authentication wherever the feature is available. According to the authority, these additional security measures can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access even if login credentials are compromised. PTA also encouraged citizens to report suspicious emails, calls and messages through official channels so that authorities can take appropriate action against cyber fraud and other online security threats. The advisory highlighted that cybercriminals continue to refine their techniques, making it increasingly important for internet users to remain alert and verify communications before responding.
