In a significant move to combat the escalating threat of cybercrime, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced the establishment of a National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency. The decision comes in response to Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) increasing strain in handling the growing number of cybercrime incidents.
Addressing the National Assembly during the Question Hour, Tarar assured that the new agency would receive full support until it becomes fully operational. He also hinted at the possibility of integrating certain FIA employees into the new organization. To ensure continuity, ongoing cybercrime cases with FIA will be transferred to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency.
In response to a question by Sharmila Faruqui, the Interior Ministry provided a breakdown of cybercrime incidents reported to FIA’s cyber wing over the past three years. The data revealed a steady increase in complaints and verified cases, highlighting the urgent need for a more specialized and dedicated agency to address the growing threat.
The establishment of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency marks a crucial step in Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its cybersecurity infrastructure and protect its citizens from online threats.
