Pakistan took a significant step towards bolstering its cybersecurity posture with the official launch of the National Computer Emergency Response Team (nCERT). This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT), aims to proactively address cyber threats and safeguard the nation’s digital infrastructure.
The nCERT formalizes a project previously known as “Cyber Security for Digital Pakistan” under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). As per a notification issued by MoITT, the nCERT, established under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 and relevant regulations, will be overseen by the National Telecommunication and Information Security Board (NTISB).
“The groundwork for the nCERT has been meticulously laid over several years through the PSDP project,” MoITT officials stated. “Skilled personnel have been recruited, and essential hardware and software procured to ensure the nCERT’s operational readiness.”
The nCERT’s primary function encompasses detecting, preventing, and responding to cyber threats. This includes safeguarding critical infrastructure, sensitive information, and digital assets. Additionally, the nCERT will play a crucial role in promoting cybersecurity awareness, fostering research and development, and implementing robust policies to fortify Pakistan’s digital landscape.
The launch of the Pakistan CERT Coordination Center (PKCERT) website marks another important milestone in this initiative. This platform serves as a vital resource for raising awareness about cyber threats such as cyber-attacks, cyber espionage, and cyber terrorism.
The establishment of the nCERT signifies Pakistan’s commitment to building a robust and resilient digital ecosystem. By proactively addressing cyber threats, the nCERT will contribute to a more secure online environment for individuals, businesses, and government institutions across the nation.
