Pakistan Petroleum Limited Reports Ransomware Incident, Assures No Disruption to Core Operations

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has reported a recent cybersecurity incident involving a ransomware intrusion that targeted certain parts of its IT infrastructure. The intrusion was detected on 6 August 2025, prompting the immediate activation of PPL’s internal cybersecurity protocols to contain the situation and secure its systems.

According to PPL, its IT and cybersecurity teams, working in collaboration with external experts, responded swiftly by implementing effective containment measures. These included the temporary suspension of selected non-critical IT services as a precautionary step to reduce potential impact and safeguard the integrity of its systems.

The company confirmed that it operates under a multi-layered cybersecurity framework, which enabled rapid isolation of the threat. PPL stated there was no evidence of business-critical or sensitive data being compromised. Core operational systems have continued functioning normally without any disruptions since the detection of the intrusion.

Addressing speculation on social media, PPL clarified that while a ransomware note had indeed been received from an external source, the company followed legal protocols and reported the matter to relevant law enforcement and regulatory authorities. Investigations are ongoing in coordination with these agencies. PPL further stated that there was no direct contact made with the hackers. Financial transactions were handled manually during this period, and the affected system was not used for processing payments while the cyber scan was underway.

PPL has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency in communicating the developments of the incident and stated that it is carrying out a detailed forensic analysis to strengthen its cyber resilience. The company emphasized that its IT teams have worked diligently to restore full system functionality in a secure manner.

Highlighting its ongoing commitment to cybersecurity, PPL stressed that protecting its digital infrastructure remains a high priority. It continues to take proactive measures to manage cyber risks effectively while maintaining the trust of stakeholders through timely action and enhanced security practices.
