NCERT Warns of Cyber Risks from AI Chatbots Like ChatGPT

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to revolutionize various sectors, AI-powered chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT have gained significant popularity. While these tools offer convenience and efficiency, they also pose significant cybersecurity risks.

The National Computer Emergency Response Team (PKCERT) has issued a cybersecurity advisory cautioning users about the potential threats associated with AI chatbots. These tools are increasingly being used for personal and enterprise purposes, from drafting emails to analyzing complex data. However, their integration into daily life also introduces vulnerabilities, such as data exposure, social engineering attacks, and malware infections.

To mitigate these risks, CERT-In recommends the following:

For Individuals:

  • Avoid sharing sensitive information with chatbots.
  • Regularly update software and scan for malware.
  • Be cautious of phishing attempts, especially those disguised as chatbot interactions.

For Organizations:

  • Implement strong security measures, including access controls and encryption.
  • Train employees on cybersecurity best practices.
  • Monitor chatbot activity for suspicious behavior.
  • Have a robust incident response plan in place.

By following these guidelines, individuals and organizations can minimize the risks associated with AI-powered chatbots and protect themselves from cyber threats. As AI technology continues to advance, it is crucial to remain vigilant and adopt a proactive approach to cybersecurity.
