National CERT Enhances Cyber Preparedness At Pakistan Meteorological Department Through Awareness Training

The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT) of Pakistan organized a comprehensive cybersecurity awareness session for officials of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The session, titled “Secure Together: Building a Culture of Cyber Awareness,” took place at the PMD Headquarters and aimed to strengthen the department’s capacity to handle digital threats through enhanced knowledge and practical guidance on cybersecurity.

The initiative forms part of National CERT’s ongoing efforts to enhance cyber readiness within critical national organizations by improving digital hygiene and operational security. As Pakistan’s reliance on technology continues to grow across all sectors, government institutions such as PMD play an increasingly vital role in safeguarding their information systems from potential cyber risks. Through awareness and structured training, National CERT aims to ensure that every department develops the technical and behavioral capacity to identify and mitigate emerging threats effectively.

Designed in accordance with National CERT’s Cybersecurity Training Guidelines, the session covered cybersecurity essentials relevant to PMD’s diverse workforce, including end users, technical staff, and management. Participants were guided on identifying phishing attempts, managing sensitive data securely, and following proper incident reporting procedures. The session emphasized the importance of cultivating a culture of vigilance, where each employee understands their role in protecting organizational information and maintaining operational continuity in the face of evolving digital risks.

The training was led by Khurram Javed, Director Capacity Building at National CERT, who highlighted the increasing need for cybersecurity preparedness across public sector organizations. He underlined National CERT’s mission to strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure through sustained training, capacity building, and cross-sector collaboration. Javed noted that as cyber threats grow in complexity, ensuring that all government departments are equipped with the skills and awareness to defend their systems has become an essential part of national resilience.

National CERT continues to collaborate closely with key national institutions like PMD to advance its vision of a secure and resilient cyber environment across Pakistan. By fostering cooperation, sharing expertise, and building awareness, the organization aims to establish a unified defense mindset across all public sector entities. This initiative underscores Pakistan’s broader commitment to developing a robust cybersecurity framework that supports safe digital transformation and strengthens confidence in the country’s technological infrastructure.
