Fortinet FortiOS 8.0 Introduces AI Governance SASE Expansion And Quantum Safe Security Features

Fortinet has introduced FortiOS 8.0, the latest version of its operating system powering the Fortinet Security Fabric, with a focus on integrating AI governance, expanding secure access service edge capabilities, and enhancing quantum safe security measures. The announcement was made on March 10, 2026 during Fortinet Accelerate 2026 held in Las Vegas, where the company outlined how secure networking is evolving into a unified operating layer capable of managing emerging enterprise requirements.

The update places significant emphasis on visibility and governance of artificial intelligence usage within enterprise environments. As organizations increasingly adopt generative AI tools, FortiOS 8.0 introduces capabilities such as FortiView for AI attack surface and shadow AI detection, enabling businesses to identify both approved and unsanctioned AI tools in use. The platform also adds AI aware application control, allowing administrators to manage specific actions within AI applications rather than simply permitting or blocking entire services. Additional visibility into Model Context Protocol and agent to agent interactions highlights the growing importance of monitoring automated workflows that may bypass traditional oversight mechanisms. These features align with broader industry observations that AI driven workloads are becoming a central factor shaping network security architecture.

Alongside AI related capabilities, Fortinet has expanded its secure access service edge offerings to address deployment flexibility and regulatory requirements. FortiOS 8.0 introduces SASE Outpost and sovereign SASE deployment models designed to support data residency and compliance needs across different regions. These options include enhanced control over log retention, control plane location, and deployment within customer owned data centers. The update also brings unified SD WAN bundles and multipath IPsec tunnels, supporting performance optimization and resilience across distributed networks. This reflects a shift in how organizations evaluate SASE solutions, where compliance and sovereignty considerations are becoming as critical as user experience and connectivity performance.

The release further extends Fortinet’s focus on encrypted traffic and future ready security through the inclusion of post quantum cryptography elements. Enhanced TLS inspection capabilities with hybrid key exchange methods aim to provide visibility into encrypted traffic while maintaining strong security standards. These updates address growing concerns around evolving cryptographic threats and the need to prepare for advancements in quantum computing. In addition, FortiOS 8.0 introduces AI driven agents across the Security Fabric to assist with troubleshooting and configuration tasks in firewall and SD WAN environments, helping reduce operational complexity and minimize configuration errors.

According to Ken Xie, Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Fortinet, the new release reflects more than two decades of development at the intersection of networking and security, with a focus on reducing complexity while improving visibility and scalability. Industry analysis also indicates that Fortinet continues to position its unified operating system approach as a way to reduce integration challenges commonly found in fragmented security environments. The company remains active in a competitive landscape that includes major vendors such as Palo Alto Networks, Cisco, and Check Point, as well as SASE focused providers like Netskope, Zscaler, Versa, and Cato. Its approach has found traction in environments such as operational technology and industrial control systems, where system uptime and simplified integration are critical considerations.
