The Sindh government has approved plans to establish three modern provincial data centers under its Digital Sindh initiative as part of efforts to strengthen digital governance, cybersecurity, and government data management across the province. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah with National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) Managing Director Major General (Retd.) Ali Farhan. Senior officials from the provincial government and representatives of NTC also attended the meeting to review ongoing cooperation and discuss the next phase of digital infrastructure development.
During the meeting, participants reviewed collaboration between the Sindh government and NTC in key areas including telecommunications, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and government data management. Discussions focused on accelerating digital transformation initiatives and improving e governance services for public sector institutions. Officials briefed the chief minister on NTC existing infrastructure, highlighting that the corporation currently operates data centers in Islamabad, Lahore, and Quetta, while also maintaining nearly 1,000 kilometers of optical fiber network across Sindh. The existing telecommunications infrastructure was presented as a foundation that can support the province’s expanding digital services and future technology projects. The meeting also included discussions on enhancing coordination between government departments to ensure efficient implementation of digital infrastructure capable of supporting secure and reliable public sector services.
Officials informed the chief minister about plans to establish a modern data center in Karachi that will support e governance initiatives and strengthen government data sovereignty. The proposed facility is expected to provide secure data storage, cloud computing services, disaster recovery capabilities, and business continuity solutions for provincial government departments. These services are intended to improve the resilience and availability of critical government systems while ensuring that official data remains protected through secure infrastructure. The planned investment reflects the province’s focus on expanding digital capabilities to support administrative functions and public services. By introducing advanced cloud and data management technologies, the project aims to provide government institutions with reliable digital infrastructure that can support current operational requirements as well as future technology adoption.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said Sindh is entering a new phase of technology driven governance and emphasized that secure digital infrastructure is essential for protecting government information as a national asset. He directed Planning and Development Board, Information Technology Department, and NTC to jointly prepare a comprehensive roadmap detailing the project’s technical requirements, implementation timeline, governance framework, and future expansion strategy. He also instructed that the proposed provincial data centers should comply with internationally recognized standards for cybersecurity, data protection, and disaster recovery to ensure secure and resilient operations. In addition, the chief minister noted that the initiative could be implemented through a public private partnership model, enabling collaboration between the government and private sector to support the development and long term operation of the digital infrastructure. The planned provincial data centers form an important part of the Digital Sindh initiative, supporting the province’s objective of improving digital governance through secure, modern, and scalable technology infrastructure.
