Cybersecurity Alert: MoneyGram Breach Exposes Sensitive Customer Data

A major cybersecurity incident has rocked MoneyGram, with hackers gaining access to sensitive customer information. The breach, which occurred between September 20 and 22, 2024, compromised a wide range of personal and financial data, including names, Social Security numbers, bank account details, and transaction histories.

The stolen data included names, phone numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, government-issued IDs, utility bills, bank account numbers, MoneyGram Plus Rewards numbers, transaction details (dates, amounts, and other information), and even criminal investigation information for a limited number of consumers.

Upon discovering the breach on September 27, MoneyGram took swift action to contain the situation. Systems were temporarily taken offline to prevent further data loss, while an investigation was launched with the assistance of cybersecurity experts and law enforcement.

While MoneyGram’s systems are now back online, the company urges customers to remain vigilant for potential fraud and identity theft. They recommend reviewing account statements regularly and monitoring credit reports.

To mitigate the impact, MoneyGram is offering affected U.S. consumers two years of free identity protection and credit monitoring services.

This incident underscores the ongoing threat of cyberattacks targeting financial institutions. As digital transactions become more prevalent, it’s imperative for businesses to invest in robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard customer data.
