FIA Takes Action Against NADRA Official Over Rs120 Million CNIC Restoration Case

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has taken action against a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) assistant director in connection with an alleged case involving the restoration of cancelled Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) of Afghan nationals. According to FIA, the official, identified as Aftab, was detained by Counter Terrorism Wing (CTW) teams over allegations that he received Rs120 million for restoring the CNICs of 51 Afghan citizens. The case is currently under investigation, with authorities examining the circumstances surrounding the restoration of the identity documents and the alleged financial transactions linked to the matter.

According to details shared by FIA, the NADRA official was allegedly involved in processing the restoration of cancelled identity cards after receiving financial benefits. The agency stated that the matter came under investigation following information regarding irregular activity related to CNIC records. NADRA manages Pakistan’s national identity database, which plays an important role in maintaining citizen identification records and supporting various public services. Any unauthorized changes or misuse of identity management systems can create administrative and security concerns, which is why authorities conduct investigations when unusual activity is identified within the registration process. The FIA’s Counter Terrorism Wing is examining the available evidence to determine the full details of the case, including the alleged transactions and the process through which the CNICs were restored.

Following the action against the official, CTW teams conducted a search of the suspect’s residence and recovered Rs1.9 million in cash, according to FIA. Investigators further stated that the remaining amount was allegedly used for purchasing property, including plots located in Havelian and Islamabad’s G-15 sector. The agency has secured ownership documents related to both properties as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are reviewing financial records, property documentation, and other relevant information to establish the complete chain of events connected with the case. The investigation will determine the nature of the alleged activities, the involvement of any additional individuals, and whether further action is required based on the findings.

The case highlights the importance of maintaining transparency and security within national identity management systems. Government institutions responsible for identity verification rely on strict procedures and monitoring mechanisms to prevent unauthorized access, misuse of records, and irregular modifications. FIA has stated that further investigation is underway and additional details will be shared as the inquiry progresses. The agency continues to examine the available evidence while coordinating with relevant departments to address concerns related to identity documentation processes. As digital identity systems become increasingly important for public administration, financial services, and access to government facilities, maintaining the integrity of these databases remains a key priority for institutions involved in national security and citizen services.
