REACT Conducts Digital Forensics Learning Session To Strengthen Cyber Investigation Skills

The Rapid Emergency and Cyber Team (REACT) organized an internal learning session titled “The Digital Detective: Uncovering the Evidence Behind Cybercrime” on 30 August, aimed at strengthening the organization’s knowledge and practical understanding of digital forensics and cybercrime investigation. The session formed part of REACT’s ongoing efforts to enhance the technical capabilities of its members through continuous learning and professional development in cybersecurity. By focusing on the principles and processes involved in digital investigations, the initiative provided participants with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of how digital evidence is collected, preserved, analyzed, and presented during cybercrime investigations.

The learning session explored several important aspects of digital forensics, beginning with an introduction to the field and its role in modern cybersecurity operations. Participants were introduced to the digital evidence lifecycle, gaining insight into how evidence is identified, acquired, preserved, examined, analyzed, and reported while maintaining its integrity throughout the investigation process. The session also covered the various sources of digital evidence that investigators encounter during cybercrime cases, including devices, networks, storage media, and online platforms. In addition, attendees learned about the stages of a forensic investigation and the structured methodologies followed by investigators when examining digital incidents. Practical discussions included commonly used forensic tools and investigative techniques that assist analysts in recovering and examining digital evidence while supporting accurate and reliable investigations. A case study was also presented to demonstrate how forensic principles are applied in real world scenarios, allowing participants to better understand the challenges and decision making involved during an investigation.

Another important focus of the session was the legal and ethical responsibilities associated with digital forensics. Participants discussed the concept of chain of custody, which ensures that digital evidence remains authentic, traceable, and admissible throughout an investigation. The session highlighted the importance of maintaining proper documentation and following established procedures to preserve evidence integrity while complying with legal and ethical requirements. Members were also introduced to the fundamentals of starting a career in digital forensics, providing guidance for those interested in developing expertise in the field. The learning experience concluded with an interactive question and answer session, enabling participants to seek clarification on technical topics, discuss practical challenges, and exchange knowledge related to forensic investigations and cybersecurity practices. The combination of theoretical concepts and practical discussions helped create a comprehensive learning experience for REACT members.

The session was delivered by Ambreena Munir, Vice President and Team Lead for Digital Forensics at REACT, who shared her expertise and professional experience with participants throughout the event. REACT expressed its appreciation for her contribution, noting that the knowledge shared during the session supported the organization’s objective of strengthening internal capabilities in digital forensics and cybersecurity. According to REACT, initiatives focused on continuous knowledge development play an important role in preparing cybersecurity professionals to better understand emerging threats and investigative methodologies. By organizing technical learning sessions covering subjects such as digital evidence handling, forensic tools, investigative techniques, and legal considerations, REACT continues to invest in building the expertise of its members and supporting the development of stronger cybersecurity and digital forensic capabilities within the organization.
