Hackers have breached the IT system of Government College University Faisalabad and attempted to alter the academic results of dozens of students, prompting the university administration to seek a formal investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Wing. The breach involved unauthorized access to the teachers portal, where the results of 32 students across 72 courses were changed. The university’s Controller Office detected discrepancies between manual academic records and information recorded in the online system and subsequently withheld the affected results. The incident has raised concerns over unauthorized access to university systems and the integrity of digital academic records, while the administration has moved to involve federal cybercrime investigators in examining how access to the faculty portals was obtained and how the changes were made.
According to the university’s application to the FIA Cyber Crime Wing, unidentified individuals gained access to the faculty portals of several teachers and made unauthorized changes to student results. Records maintained by the university indicate that the portals were accessed repeatedly from a specific IP address on multiple dates. The repeated access was identified as part of the information available to the university regarding the activity involving the affected faculty accounts. The administration has requested that the FIA conduct a formal investigation into the breach and determine the circumstances surrounding the unauthorized access and changes to student marks. The involvement of the federal cybercrime investigation authority is intended to establish how the university’s IT systems were accessed and identify the individuals responsible for the activity.
The university also stated in its application that the unidentified individuals had accepted money in exchange for altering student results. This allegation forms part of the information submitted by the administration for investigation as authorities examine the reported breach. The reported activity involved changes across 72 courses and affected the results of 32 students, making the incident a significant matter for the university’s academic records and digital systems. The discovery of discrepancies between the manual records maintained by the institution and the results appearing in its online system allowed the Controller Office to identify the affected results and withhold them. GC University Faisalabad has clarified that no degree or mark certificate based on a fraudulent result has been issued to any student so far. This means that although unauthorized changes were detected in the online results system, the university has not issued academic credentials based on those altered records. The administration’s decision to withhold the affected results has kept the discrepancies from being reflected in degrees or mark certificates issued by the institution. The university has now approached the FIA Cyber Crime Wing to investigate the reported unauthorized access, examine the repeated activity associated with the specific IP address and determine who was responsible for attempting to modify student results. The incident highlights the security concerns that can arise when academic records and faculty processes are managed through online systems, particularly when unauthorized users gain access to accounts or portals used by educational institutions.
