Roblox Introduces Real Time AI Chat Rephrasing To Replace Banned Language

Roblox has introduced a real time artificial intelligence powered chat rephrasing feature designed to automatically replace banned language with more respectful alternatives during conversations on its platform. The company announced that the new system aims to make chat interactions clearer while still enforcing its moderation policies across millions of daily users who communicate while playing games on the platform.

The new feature expands on Roblox’s existing chat filtering system, which previously replaced restricted words or phrases with a series of hash symbols. Although this approach blocked inappropriate language, the company said it often made conversations difficult to understand because messages would appear as strings of symbols. With the updated AI powered system, instead of replacing a message entirely with symbols, the platform now rewrites the text in a way that keeps the meaning close to the original while removing offensive or restricted language. For example, a message such as “Hurry TF up!” would previously appear as an unreadable string of symbols in the chat. Under the updated system, the message is automatically rewritten as “Hurry up!” so that players can continue communicating without confusion. Roblox also noted that participants in the conversation will be informed when a message has been rephrased so users understand that moderation tools have adjusted the text to maintain a respectful tone.

According to Roblox, the change is intended to reduce interruptions during gameplay conversations while maintaining community standards that guide appropriate behavior on the platform. Rajiv Bhatia, Vice President of User and Discovery Product at Roblox, said in a statement that chat plays an important role in how players interact, coordinate activities, and build connections within experiences on Roblox. He explained that the real time rephrasing system is designed to help keep discussions flowing smoothly while steering language toward what is considered acceptable on the platform. The company emphasized that the new tool does not replace its broader safety infrastructure. More serious violations or harmful behavior will still be addressed through the existing moderation and enforcement systems that Roblox uses to protect users, particularly younger audiences who form a large portion of its community.

The rollout of the feature also includes improvements to Roblox’s overall text filtering technology. The company stated that its detection systems are becoming more capable of identifying variations of restricted language, including attempts by users to bypass filters using leetspeak or modified spellings. Early internal testing suggests the improved technology is significantly reducing missed cases where users attempt to share or request personal information through disguised text. Roblox reported that these upgrades have helped reduce false negatives related to personal information sharing by twenty times. The rephrasing capability is also supported in every language currently available through Roblox’s automatic translation tools, which means moderated and rewritten messages will continue to be understandable across international player communities.

The announcement arrives shortly after Roblox implemented another safety measure requiring mandatory facial verification for users who want to access chat features on the platform. The verification system was introduced following a wave of lawsuits filed by attorneys general in several United States states including Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana. The legal actions raised concerns that young users on Roblox could be exposed to harmful situations such as grooming or explicit material. By combining identity verification with expanded artificial intelligence moderation tools, Roblox is attempting to strengthen its approach to online safety while keeping communication features functional for players who rely on chat to collaborate and socialize inside the platform’s gaming experiences.
