National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has issued an urgent advisory for WhatsApp users, providing step-by-step instructions to secure their accounts if compromised. Officials emphasized that in the event of unauthorized access, loss of account control, or suspicion that someone else is using the account, immediate action is essential to prevent misuse and protect personal data.
According to NCCIA, the first recommended step is to re-register the WhatsApp account. Users should uninstall the application from their device and reinstall it. Upon reinstalling, the login process requires entering the registered phone number, after which a six-digit verification code is sent via SMS. This code must be entered promptly. Once the verification code is submitted, WhatsApp automatically logs out any unauthorized device, as the platform allows only one active session per mobile number at a time. This ensures that even if the hacker has accessed the account, they are immediately disconnected once the legitimate user completes verification.
Officials clarified that if two-step verification is enabled by the hacker, and the original user does not know the associated PIN, WhatsApp may request the user to wait for up to seven days before full access is restored. NCCIA assured users that this waiting period does not pose any security risk, as the hacker will have already been logged out after the initial SMS verification step. During this interval, no one, including the unauthorized user, can access the account or view messages. The agency stressed that users should remain calm and follow the official recovery steps to ensure their account remains secure.
For users who have previously linked an email address with their WhatsApp account, NCCIA highlighted an additional option. Selecting the “Forgot PIN” feature allows users to reset their PIN immediately, bypassing the waiting period. This functionality provides an added layer of security, particularly for those whose accounts may be targeted by sophisticated cybercriminals. Officials further urged users to maintain vigilance, avoid sharing PINs or verification codes with others, and regularly monitor account activity to detect any unusual access promptly.
The advisory underscores the growing importance of cybersecurity awareness in Pakistan, particularly as digital communication platforms become central to both personal and professional interactions. By following NCCIA’s recommended procedures, WhatsApp users can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized account access and protect sensitive personal and professional information. Authorities also encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity to NCCIA or through official channels to ensure swift intervention and broader protection for the digital community. Maintaining good digital hygiene, staying informed about potential threats, and implementing platform security measures are critical steps in safeguarding online accounts against evolving cybercrime tactics.
