Topi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – A three-day training workshop on “Empowering the Next Generation: AI and Cyber Security” was recently organized at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI). The initiative, led jointly by the Faculty of Computer Science & Engineering (FCSE) at GIKI and the Directorate General of Science & Technology (DoST) KP, aimed to bridge the digital divide by equipping students from the merged districts of FATA with essential knowledge and skills. A total of 70 students and six faculty members from four degree colleges attended the workshop, which combined expert-led lectures with hands-on practice sessions.
One of the most encouraging aspects of the workshop was the active participation of six female students from the merged districts, marking a positive step toward inclusivity in technology education. Their involvement highlighted the importance of providing equal opportunities and fostering confidence among women in digital fields. Throughout the three days, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and cyber security, with interactive discussions encouraging them to explore how these technologies are shaping the digital landscape. Trainers emphasized both the opportunities and challenges associated with AI and cyber security, encouraging students to adopt responsible practices and to develop their interest in emerging technologies.
The closing ceremony was attended by Dr. Shafqat Ayaz, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Science, Technology and IT, who appreciated the initiative and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to preparing the province’s youth with advanced digital skills. He stressed the value of such programs in helping young people not only gain technical literacy but also the confidence needed to contribute meaningfully at both national and international levels. The event also provided participants with exposure to a professional network of experts, enabling them to seek mentorship and guidance for their academic, professional, and entrepreneurial pursuits in the future.
The success of the workshop was made possible through the support of DoST officials, including Director General Sajid Shah and Director Taza Gul, who played a pivotal role in facilitating the program. Training was delivered under the leadership of Salman Ahmed, who guided students through practical cyber security exercises. The initiative is expected to have a lasting impact by encouraging collaboration between institutions and empowering students to take their skills forward. It reinforced the importance of continued programs that nurture innovation, support inclusivity, and provide students from underrepresented regions with opportunities to develop digital capabilities. By equipping young people with both technical skills and awareness, the workshop created a pathway for them to engage productively in the fast-evolving digital economy while also fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and community development.
