Zimbabwe Promotes Cybersecurity Awareness Through National Digital Safety Campaign

Zimbabwe has launched National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), bringing together government representatives, academic institutions, industry stakeholders, students and innovators to promote stronger digital safety practices across the country. The campaign is being conducted under the theme “Don’t Make It Easy for Them: Build a Cyber Strong Zimbabwe,” highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in protecting individuals, organisations and national digital systems. As Zimbabwe continues expanding its use of digital services, mobile platforms and online technologies, the initiative aims to improve awareness around cybersecurity risks while encouraging safer practices among users of digital platforms.

The launch event at NUST focused on strengthening public understanding of cybersecurity challenges affecting individuals and organisations in an increasingly connected environment. The awareness campaign highlights several areas where users face growing risks, including mobile money fraud, social engineering attempts, fraudulent online offers, compromised accounts and the protection of children in digital spaces. By addressing these issues, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 aims to encourage citizens to adopt safer online behaviours and understand their role in maintaining a secure digital ecosystem. The initiative reflects the growing importance of cybersecurity awareness as digital services become more integrated into everyday activities, including financial transactions, communication and access to essential services.

NetOne Cellular Private Limited participated in the launch, with its delegation led by Head of Software Development Mr Valentine Mugwati. The telecommunications company said its involvement demonstrates its commitment to supporting secure and trusted connectivity as Zimbabwe advances its digital transformation goals. As a key participant in the country’s technology landscape, NetOne highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, industry and communities in addressing cybersecurity challenges. The company noted that protecting digital environments requires ongoing awareness, innovation and cooperation among all stakeholders, including businesses, institutions, households and individual users. Such collaboration is increasingly important as connectivity expands and more people rely on digital platforms for communication, financial services and online activities.

The campaign also placed emphasis on the role of young innovators in contributing to cybersecurity solutions through practical technology development. A hackathon held as part of the initiative provided students and emerging innovators with an opportunity to explore cybersecurity challenges and develop ideas aimed at addressing digital threats. The participation of young talent highlights the importance of building future cybersecurity capabilities while encouraging innovation within Zimbabwe’s technology ecosystem. By involving academic institutions and students, the programme supports the development of cybersecurity knowledge and skills among the next generation of digital professionals.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 reinforces the message that online safety is a shared responsibility requiring participation from government agencies, technology companies, educational institutions, communities and individual users. As Zimbabwe continues its digital transformation journey, strengthening cybersecurity awareness will remain important for maintaining trust in digital services and supporting a more resilient technology environment. Through awareness programmes, industry collaboration and innovation initiatives, the campaign aims to help create a safer and more inclusive digital ecosystem capable of supporting the country’s continued digital development.
