Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has directed the Information Department to strengthen monitoring of fake news and misleading information while developing an effective communication strategy to address the spread of misinformation across mainstream and digital platforms. The directives were issued during a meeting of the Sindh Information Department chaired by Sharjeel Inam Memon, with Information Secretary Kashif Gulzar Sheikh, Director General Information Moez Pirzada and other senior officials from various departments in attendance.
During the meeting, Memon instructed the Information Secretary and departmental directors to establish a stronger mechanism for identifying, verifying and responding to fake news in a timely manner. He emphasised the need for continuous monitoring of misleading information through modern technology and directed officials to ensure that false or inaccurate content targeting individuals or institutions is addressed through appropriate channels. The senior minister said that the Information Department should adopt a structured approach to monitor information trends and improve its response strategy in the evolving digital media environment. Memon further directed the department to seek assistance from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to strengthen efforts against the spread of fake news and misleading information. He said cooperation between the Sindh Information Department and NCCIA should be enhanced to improve monitoring capabilities and support action in cases where digital platforms are used for the deliberate circulation of unlawful content. The proposed coordination aims to provide additional support for verification processes and help authorities respond to misinformation-related concerns through relevant legal and institutional frameworks.
The Sindh government has also instructed the Information Department to use modern communication platforms to highlight its initiatives and improve engagement with citizens. Memon said the government’s communication strategy should represent peace, tolerance, inter-provincial harmony and national unity while incorporating representatives from different segments of society. He directed officials to focus not only on tracking misinformation but also on effectively communicating the government’s policies, projects and public initiatives. The Information Department was further asked to develop a comprehensive media strategy that can strengthen public communication and ensure timely dissemination of verified information. Officials were instructed to enhance coordination between relevant departments and utilise available digital tools to improve information management. The move comes amid increasing concerns worldwide regarding the impact of misleading online content and the challenges faced by institutions in maintaining accurate public communication across traditional and social media platforms.
Through the planned collaboration with NCCIA, the Sindh government aims to create a more organised framework for monitoring digital information, verifying claims and addressing misinformation. The initiative reflects an increasing focus among public institutions on improving digital communication practices while ensuring that responses to misleading content are handled through established procedures and relevant authorities.
