WhatsApp Developing On Device Scam Alert Feature To Warn Users Against Suspicious Messages

WhatsApp is developing a new Scam Alert feature designed to warn users when messages from unknown contacts appear to be suspicious, according to findings from WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.22.2. The feature is still under development and has not yet been made available to beta testers or general users. It is intended to enhance user safety by identifying potentially fraudulent messages while maintaining the platform’s existing privacy framework. The system is expected to notify users directly inside chats when a message appears to be linked to scam activity, offering a warning that the communication may not be trustworthy.

The feature is designed to operate entirely on the user’s device, ensuring that WhatsApp does not send message content to external servers for analysis. This approach preserves the platform’s end to end encryption model, which is a core part of WhatsApp’s privacy architecture. WhatsApp already uses similar on device processing systems for features such as voice message transcripts, where audio messages are converted into text locally on the user’s phone without being transmitted to external servers. According to WhatsApp’s official blog, these transcripts remain private and are only accessible to the recipient, ensuring that even WhatsApp itself cannot access the content. Users currently have the option to enable voice message transcripts through settings by selecting a preferred language and long pressing a voice message to generate text locally on their device.

Under the planned Scam Alert system, incoming messages from unknown contacts will be analyzed directly on the device to identify patterns that may indicate fraudulent activity. If a message is flagged as suspicious, a warning will appear within the chat interface stating that the message may be a scam and indicating that it originated from an unknown contact. The feature will provide users with two response options, either to block and report the sender or to trust the chat and continue the conversation. WhatsApp has clarified that the system will not automatically restrict communication with unknown users, instead leaving the final decision to the user after displaying the warning. The alert system is expected to operate silently in the background, and other users will not be able to detect whether the feature is enabled on a recipient’s device.

Privacy remains a central focus of the feature design, with Scam Alert intended to function without transmitting message content or analysis data outside the user’s phone. WhatsApp has not disclosed full technical details regarding the detection mechanism, but it has confirmed that all processing will remain local. The company is also developing an on device transparency report for Scam Alert activity, which will provide users with a record of how and when the feature was activated. These logs will remain stored on the device and will not be shared with WhatsApp or external servers. If no suspicious messages are detected during a given period, the report will indicate no Scam Alert activity, while detected events will be recorded locally for user reference. The feature is expected to remain optional and disabled by default, requiring users to manually enable it through settings if they wish to use it. WhatsApp has not announced an official release timeline, though the feature is expected to roll out to beta testers in a future Android update before expanding to a wider stable release.
