Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has initiated enforcement measures against websites involved in the illegal promotion and sale of medicines, marking a continued effort to regulate digital platforms and safeguard public health. The action comes amid rising concerns over unverified online pharmacies and the risks associated with unregulated medical products being marketed to consumers through websites and social media channels.
According to official sources, PTA has issued notices to three websites found to be engaged in the unauthorized sale of drugs. Following these notices, some platforms have already removed content related to the advertisement and sale of medicines. However, authorities have made it clear that any website failing to comply with directives and continuing such activities will face blocking in the future. PTA is maintaining strict monitoring of online content linked to illegal drug sales, aiming to ensure that digital platforms are not misused for distributing unapproved or potentially harmful medical products. This action reflects an ongoing regulatory approach to curb misuse of internet services for activities that pose risks to consumers.
The authority has also extended its efforts to social media platforms, where the promotion of unregistered medicines has been identified as a growing issue. PTA has directed relevant companies to remove such content, and compliance has been significant, with approximately 90 percent of companies reportedly taking down material associated with the illegal advertisement and sale of drugs. This coordinated response highlights the increasing role of digital platforms in controlling harmful content and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards. Authorities continue to engage with technology companies to address violations and limit the spread of misleading or unsafe health related promotions online.
The action follows a request from Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan, which had earlier urged PTA to block websites involved in illegal medicine sales. DRAP has emphasized that the online availability of unregistered and smuggled medications presents serious risks to public safety, as such products may not meet quality or safety standards. The regulator has specifically identified medicines related to sexual health, weight loss, and mental health as categories where online sales have been declared illegal. In addition to enforcement measures, DRAP has issued warnings regarding penalties, confiscation of drugs, and further legal action against violators. The ongoing crackdown reflects a broader effort to control unauthorized distribution channels and ensure that only approved and regulated medicines reach the public through legitimate means.
