FIA Launches AI-Powered Immigration App To Enhance Border Security

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has developed an artificial intelligence-powered application aimed at modernising immigration procedures and curbing human smuggling. A pilot of the system is expected to be launched at Islamabad International Airport, where it will be tested to streamline passenger management and strengthen border security. The initiative marks a key step in FIA’s broader digital transformation agenda as the agency looks to incorporate advanced technologies into its operational framework.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was briefed on the project during a meeting at FIA Headquarters in Islamabad. Officials highlighted how the AI system is designed to enhance passenger flow by reducing congestion and queues, while simultaneously improving the agency’s ability to detect trafficking attempts. Calling it “a need of the hour,” Naqvi underlined that the system would not only save travellers time but also reinforce Pakistan’s fight against human smugglers. He further announced immediate funding for FIA’s IT upgrades and instructed urgent renovation of the agency’s headquarters. The minister also directed the Capital Development Authority to hand over land for the FIA Academy without further delay and stressed the importance of filling all approved vacancies to address staffing shortages.

FIA Director General Raja Riffat Mukhtar explained that the new application will integrate AI-based tools to strengthen border controls while ensuring efficiency in immigration checks. He added that the organisation has already completed amendments to the FIA Act, while its digital transition is progressing with priority. Official notices are being shifted to an e-office system, with QR-coded communications set to enhance transparency. Naqvi told FIA officials that the government would provide resources but expected measurable improvements in performance in return.

In recent years, FIA has intensified its efforts to dismantle human trafficking networks. In 2023, the agency partnered with the European Union and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) to establish a second-line border control office at Islamabad International Airport, equipped with advanced forensic and IT systems to detect forged travel documents and monitor smuggling patterns. The launch of the AI-powered immigration application builds on these earlier initiatives, adding a new technological layer to Pakistan’s border management strategy. With this development, FIA is positioning itself to not only deliver smoother travel experiences but also to strengthen its institutional capacity in combating organised trafficking networks.
